How important is discernment in yogic traditions? đ€
Texts use a variety of terms to describe the necessity of making distinctions â in other words to judge whatâs conducive to freedom as opposed to an obstacle. Yet in modern yoga circles, the phrase âno judgementâ is a common injunction that silences critics.
Might it therefore be helpful to distinguish judiciousness â i.e. assessing what helps â from less skilful tendencies, such as rushing to judge based on limited evidence, or to put others down? Opinions nonetheless differ on how to differentiate these sorts of subtleties, and some judgemental elements of critical thinking have clear benefits.
Join me next Wednesday â March 25 at 7:00 pm (UK time) â for a free online talk that explores these questions. There will also be time for discussion and to ask questions about any topic â including my year-long course, The Path of Knowledge (on which more below). Sign up for the Zoom link via this button:

THE PATH OF KNOWLEDGE
Inspiration from Yogic Traditions
Would you like to gain confidence discussing philosophy, while also sharpening critical thinking skills? Do you have doubts about what comes from where, or whatâs meant by âauthenticityâ â in relation to traditions as well as your life? Have you been tempted to study a yoga degree, but felt deterred by the cost â or academia itself?
If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then this year-long immersion is for you... It expands on the courses Iâve taught on the yoga M.A. at SOAS (University of London), at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies and online, bringing history to life and exploring the contemporary relevance of yogic ideas. In the process, youâll get:
University-grade tuition for a fraction of the price.
Engaging and accessible takes on the latest research.
Discussions on how to apply it in teaching and practice.
More yoga philosophy than most advanced trainings.
An international community of like-minded peers.
To prepare for live seminars â held on alternate weeks â weâll read a range of sources, including yoga texts and articles by scholars that provide helpful context. There will also be a pre-recorded video to watch in advance that presents key themes, along with some questions that will focus your thinking for group conversations.
