What are the benefits of yoga in scientific terms? How does this relate to experiential knowledge and the teachings of texts? Can academic study be balanced with wisdom? Which common themes connect different traditions?
I recently explored these questions with Eddie Stern, who teaches yoga in New York at the Broome Street Ganesha Temple. Eddie has been practising since the 1980s and he’s the author of several books – most recently, One Simple Thing, subtitled “A New Look at the Science of Yoga and How it Can Transform Your Life”.
Our conversation discusses his research into meaning and purpose, among the many other factors that make yoga transformative. Eddie also shares some thoughts on his own transition away from daily practice of Ashtanga yoga, while reappraising his role as a teacher, and promoting open dialogue about what’s helpful.
